2 Minute film clip: Fight club- Hit me
Hit Me- Fight Club
This particular clip can be mainly aimed at younger men, around the age of the characters, which is roughly mid 20s. Due to the nature of the scene, fights are mainly depicted as being associated with males and masculinity, although this can also appeal to fans of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, which may bring in a female audience. This scene can be used to surprise the audience as well as add a touch of comedy.
The overall look of the background at first glance can suggest possibly a gritty action film as the dark surroundings, illuminated by street lights and is fairly empty, looks like a very unpleasant place to be, this can be the perfect backdrop for a fight. However, when you take into context the body language of the characters and their dialogue to each other you realise 'surprisingly' they are enjoying the fight, as they have very jokey reactions to each other, for example Brad Pitts character struggles to keep a straight face when he's about to be hit, this can slightly confuse the viewer as most people avoid fights. It also can be fairly surprising as the scene starts with the two coming out of a bar, where you can assume they have just had a drink together suggesting they are friends, and most likely friends don't start beating each other up, especially considering Edward Norton's character is dressed fairly business like (brief case, suit) with the exception of his tie, possibly giving the idea he's gone for after work drinks to relax, and professional looking people generally are expected to be me respectful and classy, not fighting.
In this clip I especially like how there is no backing music (until Norton's character gets hit), and the sounds displayed are fairly normal (e.g. train, characters breathing) considering what they have decided to do is quite random, this can involve the viewer by making them focus on characters more, as there's no flashy sound/environment to dull the sounds of the fight making it feel real. The viewer can also get a sense of what Edward Norton's character is feeling, as when he gets hit the clip slows and focuses on the detail of his heart beat and breathing, as well as subtly introducing the music, the music starts off quite relaxing blending with his heartbeat and can give the viewer a sense of worry for the character as you being to wonder if he's okay as the music slowly builds up it becomes his heartbeat.
After Norton's character gets hit the camera angle changes from the previous wide shot to a distant shot, and gives the viewer an insight into what any passer by would witness of the two, giving the viewer another perspective to think about, whilst this happened the music has seemingly gotten louder as the scene goes on. In the last part of the clip the camera shot goes to an angled close up shot of the two characters sitting down after the fight while the music goes on in the background, this part also aims to astound the viewer as the characters are nonchalantly drinking beer together (as friends) when the viewer has witnessed them brawling one minute and calm the next.
Overall the clip aims to create a sense of confusion for the audience as most people would wonder what drove two people, assumingly friends, to fight randomly and then nonchalantly agree to do it again with no remorse. The clip also aims to involve the viewer by giving them a different perspective of the fight and blending Norton's noticeable heartbeat with the music, as a heartbeat is often calming it can easily sync with those viewing to create a connection.
