Programme advertisement (print no.2) for Glue

This is the second print teaser poster I found for the E4 drama Glue, I have chosen these as inspiration for my print work as I had initially reviewed the programme and observed its demographic.

Programme advertisement (Print) for Glue

This first advert/print is for Glue, as I reviewed the TV advertisement I decided to look at the prints that went along with it. This print is a really high quality photo and at first glance can be passed off as ordinary except when you look in-depth into it you can see the lady birds and the blood drop (personally I didn’t notice the blood at first and passed it off as a part of the plant). The blood can give off the crime drama as it can imply someone has been killed, with this in mind the viewer can speculate that the out of focus image in the background is in fact a murdered victim. I like this print as it of a very high quality and can represent an idyllic scene however when you look more in-depth into it by putting two and two together you can assume the blood and body are linked and the programme is about a murder(ers)

Silver Lining Productions logo

SLiP =
Silver Lining Productions

Font- Forque
This is the logo I created for Silver Lining productions, from my logo research I decided that like BBC 3 I’d like to use an acronym and be fairly simple. I shortened down the full title to SLiP. Also due to me wanting to have a crime drama I thought that the black silhouettes with light bulbs for brains would imply a whodunit/mystery genre. The black silhouettes are mysterious as they don’t full illustrate what the person looks like as well as the light bulb representing an idea or mystery that needs to be solved. Hopefully this can present Silver Lining productions as being in the crime genre. I chose the colour pallet of red and black for a couple of reasons, one being that it stands out on the black, and the other being; red can represent blood and danger, which is fitting for a crime drama, also I created the two logos featured on a transparent background to not impair the image.
The main logo (the first one) is the productions main logo which represents the company however the singular one (just featuring a simple silhouette and the acronym) would be used similarly to comedy central as they have a simpler logo in the corner of a TV show to still represent the company yet it wouldn’t impair the image or show by not covering much up - hence the transparent back ground.

Glue: TV advertisement

Through looking at TV advertisement scenes for shows, I have decide I would like to take the second option of my brief and create a 2 minute moving image suitable for marketing.
Also, leading on from past research I decided to review the advertisement for Glue. I personally was intrigued by the few advertisements and prints that where published before the show came out. Being a fan of the crime/mystery genre, I thought this advert used great in depth cut scenes that where highly detailed to create an atmosphere of mystery, as it also resisted from giving too much of the programme away. Without knowing the back story of the programme, by the end of the advertisement you get an idea of  what its about; the crime genre can be easily presented by; the shots of the bloody hand, crumpled up newspaper reading 'murder' and the final shot of the police officer at a crime scene- also we can assume that the guy running through the fields would be a victim as due to his facial expressions and frantic running could imply he's trying to escape.

TV Programme genres research

TV programme genres

Following on from the research into E4s demographic it appears that many of the programmes featured on E4 are in the comedy genre are have comedy aspects like 'My mad fat diary' and 'Some girls'.

These are fictional programmes that present fictional characters that are realistic enough to be believable and often feature them in real life situations or present the complete opposite and have characters in made up situations to add effect, in this genre a comedic effect could be created or a dramatic effect in a drama.
This channel also features reality programmes such as Made in Chelsea. Reality programmes generally portray, through film, real life people in real life situations to create a sense of empathy with the people 'characters' shown. It is often entertaining to see how other people live and react to certain things, so promising the view of different life styles can entice a viewer to watch as show.

My film clip genre

The main genre(s) I'd like to create is a crime drama, to make this drama appeal more to the audience of 15-35 I could create a drama featuring a mid range of 20-somthing year olds (to focus on the youg adult age barcket). An example that I am going to review is the show 'Glue' it was premiered on E4, In particular I am going to focus on the TV advertisements. I personally was enticed into watching Glue as I felt the adverts for it looked quite promising as it looked as if it featured fairly relatable characters who were all within the age bracket of the demographic the channel aims for.

Another genre I'd like to feature in my 2 minute film clip would be comedy, l am a fan of this genre and have watched many comedic programmes over the years like 'The big bang theory' and 'friends'. I am also aware that comedy is difficult to write and everyone’s sense of humour is different therefore  my solution ( if I choose to add comedy aspects) would be to interject hints of it into my film clip, this could be achieved by contrasting serious, intimidating moments with comedy to create an enjoyable show to watch. A popular example that contrasts serious moments with humour is 'Sherlock' this programme is featured on BBC however it takes in a large audience (of all ages, including the 15-35 demographic)

Another idea that mainly focuses of the comedy genre and provides a spoof of a crime drama would be the film 'Clue', this is one of my favourite films as it spoofs the crime drama, by creating funny memorable characters and a somewhat silly plot. I could take ideas from this film of using spoof aspects as they can create a funny twist on a crime drama, yet I could tone it down and make the film clip still seem dramatic.
If I am able to interject comedy into my film clip I'd very much like to use it however, as previously mentioned, it can be difficult as humour varies from viewer to viewer. Overall I'd like to focus on the crime/mystery genre.

Audience Research

Audience Research

Research of E4s demographic.
E4 promote the use of advertisements on their channel and give information into their demographic and the kind of audience that they get, I researched this due to my breif being of a similar demographic. Here’s what they said;
“Why advertise on E4?

•E4 and E4 +1's Share of Commercial Impacts holds steady very strong for 16-34s. Furthermore within its competitive set E4 is the top converting channel for Adults 16-34, Women 16-34 and ABC1 16-34s.
•Through research, we know that E4 viewers are predominantly young and upmarket, but they’re also fashion conscious, sociable, connected, heavy internet users, they love going out and tend to use advertising as one of their many information sources. They are also likely to be opinion formers and more likely to talk about brands and convince them to try them out.
•E4 and E4+1 reach over 8.9m people each month. On top of this it has a young and upmarket viewing profile, with; 52% of viewers 16-34 (Vs 23% Total Commercial TV), 43% ABC1 (Vs 38% Total Com) and 61% female (Vs 54% Total Com TV). “
(Information found from; https://www.channel4sales.com/platforms/e4 )
E4 is also available on; Freeview, DSAT and cable, and E4 HD on Sky which give them a wide audience.
Based on what they say in their advertisements page the channel is popular and has a stable audience for 16-34 year olds (only slightly out of my target audience of 15-35). The research also stated that the majority of viewers are ‘young and upmarket, but they’re also fashion conscious, sociable, connected, heavy internet users, they love going out and tend to use advertising as one of their many information sources’- this is ideal for companies wishing to advertise on the E4 channel.
Stats broken down;
E4 AND E4+1 have an audience of over 8.9m people each month.
52% of viewers are 16-34.
43% in the class ABC1 (upper middle class, middle class and lower middle class)
61% Female.

It seems that just over half their audience is 16-34 year olds and the majority of viewers are females.
TV shows shown on E4
7 OF THE TOP 10 converting programmes for 16-34 year olds are on E4.
They are;
2- How I met your mother
3- Brooklyn nine nine
4-My mad fat diary
5-Two broke girls
6-The inbetweeners
7-Troy

Existing Logo research.

Due to my chosen brief being Silver Lining Productions - a TV company- I looked at TV company logos that already exist to give me inspiration and an understanding of why/how the logos are recognisable and represent the company they come from. Due to me not having a theme idea for my main pieces yet I tried to find/analyse logos belonging to channels that have a variation of genres instead of focusing on 3 drama channels for example. Some logos may relate to the genre of the channel however I plan to create a neutral logo that could represent any genre that I plan to base my work around.

Comedy Central

The comedy central logo is quite recognisable mainly due to the logo having the channels name on it, even known the 'central' is upside down its still fairly readable and clear due to the font and colouring. Usually when the logo is on TV at the corner of the screen it has a transparent background so it doesn't cover the picture, also when the logo is advertised on the channel it flips around a bit so you can read the 'central' part, also by having the 'central' upside down it hints at the comedic genre that the channel is.
In the photos I included two variations of the same logo, no.1 is usually in the corner of the screen when a programme is on and no. 2 appears in the adverts like I mentioned.
The colouring of these 2 are black on a white or a transparent background however the channel also features red and white themes, I like how the logo colours are simple and the logo its basic lines as its not over complicated and there's not too much going on. Therefore it is easily recognisable from the forward and backward c's as well as the clear text.

BBC 3

The BBC3 logo is also fairly recognisable, especially in the UK as it is part of the BBC network. Also like the comedy central logo, the BBC3 logo has text stating it is for the BBC3 making it clear for people to understand and recognise.
This is the current BBC3 logo and it often is a moving image product coming on in adverts for the channel, however the stationary logo again has a fairly simple colour pallet except on the image ( which is one variation of the logo) has different tones of pink as this particular variation is a moving clip that shows the 'three' being filled up with pink liquid.
This logo overall is simple and  clearly presents the company's channel  name. The background of this logo often depends on the adverts background or that of the variation as the BBC3 logo roughly stays the same however can change slightly due to how it's presented/advertised.
I also like how this advert is fairly neutral as the BBC3 channel shows arrange of genres from soaps to dramas and comedies, this logo doesn't tie them to one thing.

E4

My chosen brief said that the target audience is similar to that of E4 so I decided it would be a good idea to review and research their logo.
The E4 logo again is quite simple, in colour and style, nether the less it is still a recognisable logo despite not knowing what the 'E' stands for (after research I found it stood for entertainment). This company has always been shorted down, like the BBC it uses an acronym to present the company's name.
Similar to BBC3 the channel isn't tied to a specific genre of shows playing host to both dram and comedy, this logo is also fairly neutral and doesn't reduce the variety of shows played into one category like the comedy central one - hints at comedy.
The colour pallet Is also simple and quite plain with only purple and white being used. this can make the logo stand out as its not dark and isn't cluttered with colour.

Overall

After reviewing existing TV company logos I have decided I'd like to stick with simple themes/colours and possibly have an acronym to shorten the long 'Silver Lining Productions' title into something quicker to say and something that would fit better as a logo. Also by shortening the logo it is easier to remember and therefore it would be more recognisable to the audience. Also taking inspiration from BBC3 and E4 id like to create a neutral logo (like mentioned before) that won't pin the company to one genre or theme.

Chosen breif.

Silver Lining Productions.

Out of the available briefs I chose brief no.1, this was the Silver Lining Productions brief. This brief states that I work for a multi-media production company, Silver Lining Productions, this company produces; fly on the wall documentaries (such as 'Life behind bars'), structured reality programs (such as 'Made in Chelsea') and fiction products (such as 'Eastenders'). This company also dabbles in supporting media for these broadcasts in print, audio and e-media.

The main details included in the brief that can affect my overall project are; a target audience of 15-35 year olds (similar to E4s demographic), my work has to be suitable for a pre-watershed broadcasting and that the company are known for 'pushing the boundaries' of existing formats, which means creative and original approaches are widely excepted.

Out of the three possible task choices of Broadcasting, printing and e-media, I decided to chose broadcasting and printing as I think they would be best suited together as printing can be gathered while the film clips are being produced. Going more in-depth into the choice of broadcasting there were three further tasks to choose one from and I an undecided at this current moment over which one to pick however it will most likely be to produce a few opening scenes i.e. opening credits or a two minute moving image product ideal for marketing i.e. a short advertisement. Also going more in-depth into the printing choice there are two further tasks to choose from and I have decided to complete the first one which is to create a teaser ad campaign that will be published before broadcasting the show.

2 Minute film clip: Fight club- Hit me

Hit Me- Fight Club

This particular clip can be mainly aimed at younger men, around the age of the characters, which is roughly mid 20s. Due to the nature of the scene, fights are mainly depicted as being associated with males and masculinity, although this can also appeal to fans of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, which may bring in a female audience. This scene can be used to surprise the audience as well as add a touch of comedy.

The overall look of the background at first glance can suggest possibly a gritty action film as the dark surroundings, illuminated by street lights and is fairly empty, looks like a very unpleasant place to be, this can be the perfect backdrop for a fight. However, when you take into context the body language of the characters and their dialogue to each other you realise 'surprisingly' they are enjoying the fight, as they have very jokey reactions to each other, for example Brad Pitts character struggles to keep a straight face when he's about to be hit, this can slightly confuse the viewer as most people avoid fights. It also can be fairly surprising as the scene starts with the two coming out of a bar, where you can assume they have just had a drink together suggesting they are friends, and most likely friends don't start beating each other up, especially considering Edward Norton's character is dressed fairly business like (brief case, suit) with the exception of his tie, possibly giving the idea he's gone for after work drinks to relax, and  professional looking people generally are expected to be me respectful and classy, not fighting.

In this clip I especially like how there is no backing music (until Norton's character gets hit), and the sounds displayed are fairly normal (e.g. train, characters breathing) considering what they have decided to do is quite random, this can involve the viewer by making them focus on characters more, as there's no flashy sound/environment to dull the sounds of the fight making it feel real. The viewer can also get a sense of what Edward Norton's character is feeling, as when he gets hit the clip slows and focuses on the detail of his heart beat and breathing, as well as subtly introducing the music, the music starts off quite relaxing blending with his heartbeat and can give the viewer a sense of worry for the character as you being to wonder if he's okay as the music slowly builds up it becomes his heartbeat.

After Norton's character gets hit the camera angle changes from the previous wide shot to a distant shot, and gives the viewer an insight into what any passer by would witness of the two, giving the viewer another perspective to think about, whilst this happened the music has seemingly gotten louder as the scene goes on. In the last part of the clip the camera shot goes to an angled close up shot of the two characters sitting down after the fight while the music goes on in the background, this part also aims to astound the viewer as the characters are nonchalantly drinking beer together (as friends) when the viewer has witnessed them brawling one minute and calm the next.

Overall the clip aims to create a sense of confusion for the audience as most people would wonder what drove two people, assumingly friends, to fight randomly and then nonchalantly agree to do it again with no remorse. The clip also aims to involve the viewer by giving them a different perspective of the fight and blending Norton's noticeable heartbeat with the music, as a heartbeat is often calming it can easily sync with those viewing to create a connection.
